The Employee was a year-long conceptual artwork by Joshua Schwebel at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario (2020-21). One of Canada's first artist-run centres, FCG has been publicly funded for almost 50 years, yet is staffed by a single, part-time employee whose disproportionate workload is not uncommon in artist-run centres in Canada. To realize The Employee, Schwebel obtained funding from the Canada Council for the Arts to hire a performer, “the employee”, who he delegated to write funding applications on behalf of FCG. Schwebel intended to reinforce the gallery’s capacity, while the gallery, in turn, provided the framework through which the performer’s administrative activities would be signified as art. Ultimately, none of the employee’s grant applications were successful.

This book, also The Employee, is a publication of critical texts and first-person testimonials by artists and cultural workers reflecting on Schwebel’s work and their own labour contexts. As Dana Kopel, writer, labour organizer, and a contributor to this book, writes, “The Employee documents a year of precarious work as a lens into the crumbling infrastructure of the regional gallery system and labour in the arts more broadly; it prompts consideration of the often detrimental ways that contemporary art production relies on both corporate and corporatizing state funding models that exist primarily to serve the expansion and entrenchment of capital. In doing so, the work implicitly also poses the question: What can we, as art workers, do about it?”

The Employee is edited by Joshua Schwebel and Lauren Wetmore and includes contributions by the editors and Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte, Teresa Carlesimo, Bopha Chhay, Dana Kopel, Michelle Lacombe, Denise Ryner, Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott and Marina Vishmidt.

Dear Jonathan,

(Offline from M.A. for the moment)

Thank you for your continued generous solidarity with The Employee project.

It would be wonderful to present the book properly at ARCA, and I am getting the impression that your championing and professionalism will be the only way that will be possible. Please let me know if I can support your work on our behalf.

In the meantime, I am attaching the panel proposal that Stefan initially solicited from us on 6 January. M.A. followed up on 7 February saying that the Board had received the proposal favourably, but that there was no budget to support it. Josh and I offered to self-fund with a CCA grant application, which M.A. agreed to on 20 February by offering us a 10am panel slot on 13 June at Club SAW. Since then communication seems to have broken down.

On our end, however, we remain at the ready to make this happen. Josh and I can travel to Ottawa/Gatineau, Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott is already confirmed to attend the conference, and Bopha Chhay is open to appearing on the panel via video call.

Please feel free to get back to me if you need any further information. I am always reachable (on CET time) by WhatsApp at +32 (0) 489 42 9679.

Warmly and with great care,

Lauren

Hi Jonathan,
That’s disappointing, but thank you so much for your efforts.
See you again soon I’m sure,
Warmly,
Josh

Hi Jonathan,

A quick follow up to let you know that Tam-Ca and I chatted over video call on Friday. I reached out to her to in an effort to clear up the misunderstandings that have plagued communications around this collaboration, and to re-establish mutual respect between our shared communities.

In our conversation it became clear to me that there has been a serious breakdown in communication amongst the conference organisers, which had been scapegoated to unprofessionalism on the part of Josh. I’m glad I was able to express how problematic this dynamic is to Tam-Ca.

It it a shame that, despite being issued two separate invitations, offers of funding, and great will on our part to work with ARCA, The Employee will not be present at the conference. That said, I wish them a successful conference, and send my sincere thanks to you for your support.

Have a lovely week,
Lauren
