House9 winter and summer closures

Farah Khan <█████████████████████ > To: Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com>, Lauren Wetmore <████████████████████████████████ >, Mark Ambrose Harris <████████████████████ >

Hey Josh and Lauren!

So excited to see you IRL so soon!

I wanted to give you a quick update, along with a note about our upcoming away dates:

Printing:
We’re talking w/ the printer, and they recommend offset given the structure and size (number of pages) of the book. We've asked for quotes with and without the graphite, with the OTA binding.

Proofreading/drafts:
Once we receive your edits (due Nov 18). We will incorporate your edits and get you the next PDF before we leave for the holidays. (If you only have very few edits, we'll be done sooner, of course). And we'll make final corrections when we're back late Jan.

Paper/IRL:
Where would you like to meet on Dec 6?

Website:
  • Max is wondering where you are on your email editing, Josh
  • In late January when we're back, Max will:
    • Complete all the site functionality
    • Complete the pixel-perfect and responsive views
    • Optimize so the site loads faster
Launch:
Do you have a launch date in mind? I know it's been a rolling process :)

So, I think we're totally on track and unaffected by the closure. Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions.

Here's the note we're sending out to all our clients:

- - -

We’ve been thinking about ways to make our work/life balance better, and one of our newer clients told us about the month-long sabbaticals they take during the summer. As you know, we’ve instituted flexible Fridays a few years ago: no meetings on Friday and folks can take the day off without prior notice. We’ve noticed that most of us tend to remain and work on Fridays anyway, so the day off really isn’t used that often.

So, we had another thought: what if we just compress those days together during two of our quietest moments in the year: after the Xmas break and during the summer when several of our clients in the art and culture sector are also closed. We are proposing the following:

  • Winter:

    • our usual 3 weeks from Dec 23–Jan 10

    • two extra weeks from Jan 13–24

    • returning on January 27, 2025

  • Summer:

    • We already take 2 weeks, but will extend to 4, matching our art/culture clients’ sabbaticals, typically mid-July to Mid-August

    • Exact dates TBH, but we'd love some feedback from you

We think this will help in the following ways:

  1. Give ourselves proper time away, to do often-neglected life-related tasks, and actually have a bit of time afterwards to truly relax, learn, engage, and bring that inspiration back to House9 and to you;

  2. Allow ourselves time to travel, to visit family and friends abroad: travel is more expensive than ever, so we think it’s important to allow ourselves the time and space to properly get away;

  3. Financial: we are mercifully doing ok, but times have been tough financially for us all. We want to be mindful that we’re compensating everyone fairly for their time and efforts, and where we lack the dollars, we can return the time.

This will of course be an adjustment and we expect this January to be a bit of a test and soft closure, while some of us work quietly in the background without meetings. We know we have deadlines with many of you and intend to keep them as scheduled. We are already working in a way that will help make these two sabbaticals possible, but if you have any concerns about your specific deadlines, I would love to hear them. I know we can find solutions together.

Thank you as always for being so good to us, for your loyalty, creativity and continued trust. Thank you also for helping us build a culture of care—we could not be who we are without you.

And again, if you have ANY concerns, please email me!

Hi Farah,

Thanks for these updates. Good to know about your closures. Josh and I are of a mind that we are all working to get the book done as soon as possible, but we are also open to it taking the time it needs to take to get done right, and that everyone’s capacity is respected.

We’re excited to see you soon too! Would it make sense for us to meet at your place on December 6th? Alternatively, I am staying at the Darling, if you two would prefer to meet there?

We have to push our deadline for the first round of notes to 26 November. Josh and I are meeting that day to consolidate everything, so we will be able to pass them on to you by the end of that day.

No launch date in mind, as of yet, but we are thinking of February 2025 as the deadline for having the books, dependant of course on all the interlocking timelines.

Josh will get back to you soon about the website.

Warmly,
Lauren
