Lauren: I think when talking about what change is possible it is important to think about who public funding bodies are actually responsible to.
Josh: I think it's just government ministers, isn’t it?
Denise: Right, they're preparing metrics to present to a public that is not interested in, or aware of artists-run culture. At some point they have to justify how much goes to the arts and there have been multiple eras when culture was targeted as an easy punching bag. I’m thinking of the Mike Harris era and was it Stephen Harper who talked about “artists at their expensive galas, subsidised by taxpayers”? We're always fighting that too.
Lauren: So, the burden of performing legitimacy is not just on us. It goes all that way up. In that sense, these funders are not making decisions entirely based on who they are purporting to serve, and that creates systems that are not attuned to the reality of how artist-run spaces function. | Josh Schwebel • 9:51 AM, Sep 28 (CEST)This segment feels a bit shaky… a bit too conjectural.
