As an organization that was founded in 1986, Artspeak is one of the more established artist-run centres in Canada and, as a result, hasd solid HR practices in place. It continues to pay close attention to employment standards and fairand, fair wages while, addressing and ensuring benefits, regular working hours, adequate leave, an annual review, and possibilities for professional development. The organization attemptsed to build in flexibility to allow staff to pursue their artistic practice. This iswas the responsibility of the HR committee together with the director.

I have changed this to present tense, but it is possible that you wanted it to be in past tense as these observations do not extend to before and after your tenure.

Witnessing The Employee necessitates an acknowledgement that an uncritical participation within these systems and structures perpetuates a false idea of the neutrality of these organizations whilst actively denying the reality of current challenges and social responsibilities.

emotional labour

Bopha Chhay

• 8:03 PM, Aug 11 (CEST)
I used emotional labour here, but also considered 'immaterial labour'. I felt that immaterial labour was what I was referring to more broadly. Happy change either way.

Lauren Wetmore

• 1:54 PM, Aug 19 (CEST)
I think that "emotional labour" is good - it is an immediately recognisable and understood term now. That said, said immaterial labour would also be important to include (I see them as perhaps separate). Would it make sense to include both?

what about changing "achieve" to "allow for" to communicate better that the problem is the structure of the role, not the achievements of the people who hold it.

The importance of cultivating this type of cultural space also extends to a consideration of where these centers are located. The neighbourhoods where these centers are situated crucially informed how I thought about how relationships are formed and what our responsibilities were. Both Chinatown (where 221A was located until 2017) and Gastown/Downtown Eastside (Artspeak) have faced immense contradictory social and economic pressures resulting in accelerated processes of gentrification, which continues to displace communities reliant on social and cultural services located in this area of the city. We were cognizant of how we were implicated in these processes, and what the role of an art gallery was in these neighbourhoods and made sure that our organizational priorities were grounded within the responsibilities and relationships we held to our neighbours and wider communities.

I felt like this was an important inclusion actually. It grounded your point into a geography that bolstered your point.

Richard Fung’s (chair of the more other conundrums panel)

This comes in without enough context on the panel. It seems like that context comes later so maybe this is an issue of ordering information across the drafts. If you could situate the reader in who Fung is and what the panel was here, then we can proceed with an good understanding.

the artist

It could reinforce your point here to mention that  all three people involved are artists - Josh, Teresa and Camille?
As a performance, The Employee emphasizes process rather than the product. It is important to note this aspect of the work as it frees ‘the employee’ from the usual obligations of a job. The contract, between the ARTIST Joshua Schwebel and the PERFORMANCE ARTIST Camille Zoe Valcourt Synnott detailing the expectations of the performance exteriorizes the administrative work of grant writing outside of the usual place of work, that being the GALLERY (Forest City Gallery). It does not fetishize the labour performed by arts workers in terms of aesthetics, but instead frees it. Externalizing the performance from the space of the gallery further removes the potential for the added moral responsibilities that frequently accompany the work. The employee is thereby freed from the usual metrics of anticipated progress, productivity, and success.

I think that the paragraph above does such a strong job of concluding  this essay that I would consider removing this paragraph. As it presents some new analysis it sits a bit uncomfortably as the last note, and it would be a shame to detract from the strength of what has just come above.
