Re: The Employee + H9 Meeting Notes: August 14, 2024

Lauren Wetmore <████████████████████████████████ > To: Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com>

Hi Josh,
Here is what we decided below.

Next Steps:
- Ask them if they can provide a package for publisher: Title page, a couple image spreads, a couple text spreads, and any design elements they want to include to show off the design.
- LW on content: josh’s two essay have been updated and are now final, Asher Foundation has signed off on those two images. Lauren will will update table of contents, and provide Asher high res images by end of week. Lauren’s intro will be done by end of September (2500, no images).

- Ask them for schedule of production

- Do paper test by mail

Dear Farah, Mark, Louis, Miranda,
Thank you SO so much for this updated draft.
Lauren and I really appreciate these adjustments and the new details you have added.

Here are our responses to the latest version of the design, almost all of which are completely positive. But really, overall, I am just super excited to have this draft.

Based on your last comments, here’s what we changed:

  • We dropped the body font size to 11 pts
Great!
  • Because of that decrease, we had to make everything else a little smaller to keep the contrast on the page
No problem!
  • We changed the way endnotes are marked in the body copy. They relate more directly to the notes themselves. The grey mono also adds a nice bit of detail and texture.
Love it.
  • We finally designed the pull quotes :)
Also great.
  • We removed the all caps from the email on the title pages
Thanks, that's also looking good.
  • We added an optional grey highlight to proper nouns, applied in the example to the first time the names appear. We could also use this convention to draw attention to other words (not necessarily names).
This is the one suggestion that we aren't too keen on. We would prefer to leave this out.

What we didn’t do:

We didn’t make the font lighter. We feel strongly that medium is important. The overall texture of the page. Because we removed so much detailing for the text-heavy pages, making the typeface lighter disconnected the design of these pages from the rest of the book pages (which were already approved). Making it lighter would mean having to redesign all those pages and none of us want to go there. Because we made it smaller, though, we feel that the readability is improved, which was your central concern.
no problem. The body text looks really good now.

We added another design element, which you’ll see halfway through the presentation: we thought about adding a black bar to the pages to reference the website (scroll bars) and progress (length of article). We love how the texture looks on the pages and also on the sides of the book. We have two concepts:

  • The bar height is proportional to the number of pages each essay takes up. In this design, the bar stays in the same place on the same essay. The shapes on the edges of the book are more graph-like.
  • The bar is a consistent height and “scrolls” down within each essay. In this version, the edges of the book are more textured.
  • Note that there’s a central black bar where the website screenshots appear against a black background.
Of the two versions, we prefer what is labeled as "option B" in the pdf presentation, where the bar is used to indicate the length of the essay, without the scrolling effect.

So far as I can tell, now that we have agreed on these options, the design is officially approved, if I am not mistaken! If this is the case, then the next step would be to prepare a fully laid out proof. With this in mind, I have a few agenda items, below.

1. LAYOUT / CONTENT
The drive folder contains final versions of all the material except for a couple of minor aspects. The remaining content to be uploaded is: the final draft of Lauren's intro. Lauren will update the table of contents, add the hi-res version of the Asher images, and upload the final version of her introduction by the end of the month. (In the meantime, to begin laying out the proof, Lauren's intro will be 2500 words, no images). The outstanding images are now approved by the Asher foundation, so we have permissions for all the images.

2. PUBLICATION PITCH PACKAGE
Lauren and I are hoping to pitch the publication to other publishers and distributors (especially in the EU). For this purpose, it would be extremely helpful to have a dossier that gives potential publishers a visual sense of the book. A couple of mock-ups, a title page, and some sample spreads (much like what we already have, but put into a single pdf with the latest updates, including examples with images) would be excellent.

3. SCHEDULE OF PRODUCTION
It would be really helpful to agree on a schedule for the final stages of production. Do you have an idea of when the next steps will be completed?

4. PAPER / INK
I know that Farah and I discussed meeting in person to select paper and inks, but I am not sure if my travel schedule is going to be lining up with our production schedule. It will help to know when the approval of paper and ink needs to be done, so I can see if it is possible in person, otherwise, it might be easier to do this by mail.

And last but not least, I think that we now have an approved design that will be gorgeous. I am beyond excited to see what the book will look like, and can't wait to have it printed.
thank you again for all of your hard work and openness.
Much love,
Josh

Hi Josh,

Thanks for this feedback.

Miranda and Louis are out for a few days, but we'll debrief as a team this coming Friday (before Farah leaves on vacation), so we should have some responses for you soon.

Hi everyone,

I’m so excited that we have landed on such an incredible design. Thank you for making this such a rigorous and responsive process.

All the texts in the folder are ready for layout! The only outstanding aspect is the 2 Asher images, which I will upload as soon as they come to me.

Thank you!
Lauren
