Quick question

Dearest Mariane,
Happy New Year!
I hope you have been well, and I apologize for the delay in updates about the publication. It has been a much longer than expected process, but is very near to completion. We just sent the second proof back to the designers today!

In advance of the printed book, Lauren and I are pitching to present a panel at the ARCA conference this coming June on the project.
I am just writing to ask if you might already be planning on attending, as this information would augment our pitch.
I look forward to hearing from you, for other updates as well, and I will be in touch soon with further information about the publication.
Warmest greetings,
Josh

Hi Josh,

It's always nice to hear from you! Happy new year as well.
It's great to hear that the book is in progress... these projects always take longer than expected so I haven't been worried. Although I might need to update my bio as I have written my dissertation and will be defending it in March!

I was not planning on attending the ARCA conference, but it would be a good event for me to attend. You can add me to your panel, and if I can't make it in person then I can participate remotely. I would love to pitch my dissertation, which is on the institutionalization of BC ARCs in relation to the development of federal and provincial cultural policies from the 1960s to 2000. I have not seen the call for submissions, could you send me a link? Or are you pitching the project independently of a call? Or would it fit with the panel you are putting together?

Looking forward to hearing more about this.
Mariane

P.s. I followed your recent project, One Hand Washes the Other, at a distance, but with interest. I was in a final dissertation writing blitz in the fall so I wasn't able to attend the presentations, which seemed very interesting. Congrats on this big undertaking.

dear Mariane,
great to hear from you too!
Do let me know if you have an updated bio -- we're sending the updated proof to the designers by the 27th of this month, so if you do want to send something before the 24, we can make those changes.
For the ARCA conference, right now the plan is to give presentations that tease the content of the publication, so even while your dissertation is intrinsically connected, and sounds right up my alley, it would make more sense to present the text (in an abridged format) that is already within the publication. In any case, at this stage we've just sent in a pitch for the conference in which we listed you as a potential contributor i.e. that you aren't planning on attending (this is more about asking them for funding). We will let you know if it is accepted. There might be some funding through them for you to attend, and we'll let you know as this plan progresses.
I'm also planning a trip to Vancouver towards the end of February because I will be part of an exhibition at the Libby Leshold opening on the 27 of Feb. I know that this is right before your defense, and so not ideal for you, so no pressure if you don't feel up for it but I would LOVE to see you...
Finally, and this is looking kind of unlikely, but if the book gets printed in time I might try to put together a launch while I'm in Vancouver, to take advantage of being out there and the fact that yourself and Bopha are both local contributors. If this is the case, it would be fantastic if you could join the launch, but this is not firm yet so I don't want to add stress.
Congrats on coming to a finish on your dissertation! This is fantastic!
warmly,
Josh

Hello Josh,

Great news about the book being printed soon. I will send you a new bio ASAP. A Vancouver launch would be great, and I'm glad to be in a book with Bopha.

Re- ARCA conference, sounds good. I'll be happy to contribute if possible. Will wait and see what happens... I've applied to some post-doc positions and assistant prof jobs in Ontario and Quebec so my life could be very different starting this spring... to be continued.

I would also love to see you when you're in town, although I may be visiting my family in Montreal in February. I'm not sure if and when I'd be going, but will keep you posted. My defence will be mid-March so no stress there.
I can offer a place to stay if you want to extend your trip to plan a launch or just hang out in Vancouver. My partner lives in Kelowna mostly now so it's just me and Captain here. I can offer a mattress in Chris's office (which is pretty empty).

Keep in touch about all of the above.
Mariane

hi Mariane,
if the timing works out that you're not in Montreal when I'm in Vancouver (that would be terrible timing!), I'd be very grateful to be able to stay with you!
For the moment, I'm looking at arriving on the 23 of February, for the opening on the 27, with a few additional days built in after to see friends, to interview April (CARFAC), and possibly to hold the booklaunch.
Would you be open to have me stay in Chris' office the week from the 23 - 2 (maximum)?
Please don't hesitate to say no if it feels like too much of an imposition!
thank you so much and hope to see you soon regardless, we're very much due for a catch-up.
x
Josh

Hi Josh,

Yes of course. You're welcome to stay at our place.
I had a chat with my Mom since my last email and I'm not sure anymore if I'll be going to Montreal... There's a bunch of factors. Anyways, even if I'm there when you arrive in BC, you can stay at our place no problem. We're on the top floor of a 3-suite house at ████ ███████ ██. in East Van.
I'll let you know what's going on on my end when I figure it out.

Talk soon.
Mariane

Hi Mariane,
That’s really kind of you, and a big relief to hear.
Let’s be in touch as the trip approaches to clarify things, but it’s really helpful to have a place to stay settled.
And it will be so nice to have that kind of time together.
See you quite soon!
