Your essay is very exciting. It is so full of excellent analysis and perfectly chosen citations. Its so juicy - and as such shows how juicy The Employee is. Its ambitious and rigorous and fresh. Well done!!
I’ve made a few notes in the doc, but they are mostly stray, first reading, things. I want to talk the whole text through with you before digging deeper. This is a really complex text!
I think we need to resolve your questions (authorship, references to your work) before you proceed to work on this further. If we can establish a logic of where the text is coming from, and what it is pointing at, I think that we can make quick work of a final draft. Funnily enough, we need to find the ground.
So, here are a few very basic questions that I think will be helpful to think through:
1. Whose voice is this text written in?
2. The “ground” is the key to this text, and your final analysis of how it functions in The Employee is terrific. How can this be signalled sooner so that the reader is following your “grounding” sign posts through a lineage of practices, rather than waiting for them to become clear in relation to The Employee?
3. Why do you think that this text is the first one in the book (if I’m not mistaken) to explicitly bring up the correlation between “women’s work” and administration/secretarial positions in culture?
