Hi Jonathan,

Apologies for chasing you at what must be a very busy moment. We’d be grateful to move this forward when you have the chance.

Warmly,
Lauren

Hi Lauren and Josh,

Very sorry to keep you waiting on this — it’s been a bit hectic amid operating grants and making preparations for my departure. I have a draft of the co-publishing agreement here. Note that it was developed for our projects with institutions, mainly. I’ve tried to edit it for this context, but it’s possible that there is still a bit of an organization to organization feel to it.

It’ll try to answer Josh’s questions below the best I can:

I think this is ultimately up to you, but if FCG is taking 80, would it make sense to split that same amount between the two of you? 40 each?

Short answer is no. I had some success connecting Information Office with Idea Books (NL) and pursued them recently for some AM titles, but we haven’t had the same success. I think it’s worth reaching out to Antenne Books. Jeff Khonsary also reported a new distributor, but I’m still trying to get the name from him. It is very unfortunate about Motto.

Primary Information is distributed by DAP/Art Books, who work with UTP here in Canada. I know them pretty well, as James showed with me at the Or Gallery when I was there, but I think it’s really their own publications they focus on. I would say that Art Metropole has effective distribution in Canada, and Dallas has been doing an excellent job improving our reach in the US.

Regards,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks very much for your responses and the draft contract. When is your last day at Art Met?

Josh and I are both traveling at the moment but will get back on all fronts as soon as we have a moment to put our heads together.

In the meantime, I would be grateful to know more about your distribution in Canada and the US - is there a list of retailers you can share to that I can have an idea of the scope?

All best,
Lauren

Hi Lauren,

I can offer some more info on the scope of our distribution program. I've attached a list of retailers who have stocked with us in the past couple of years, the majority of which are in Canada. I'm always working on adding more retailers to this list so it's a constantly evolving document, but you'll see that we mostly focus on supplying to arts-focussed bookstores and gallery/museum bookstores. Some of the retailers on this list have already pre-ordered The Employee which is great!

Kind regards,
Dallas

Thanks Dallas for picking up this thread, and apologies to Josh and Lauren for my slow response. I’m a bit distracted with with other items as I’m getting ready to depart. I think that March 31 is officially my last day at Art Metropole, but I don’t think that should be a concern here. I know the board plans to make an appointment this week for a new ED. Because this is happening so quickly, I expect the contract should be executed by that person, rather than me, but I am confident this partnership will be a welcome one. I will certainly make a strong case if there needs to be one.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for writing, and for the updates. All of this makes sense, and I wish you a smooth transition as you wrap up your time at art met. Thanks for all of your support, and I look forward to seeing what you do next, and to discovering who the new ED will be.
Warmest regards,
Josh
