dear Kirsty,
how are you? I hope you are doing ok in this very broken world.
I am writing to pass along information about a project that I am doing with Forest City Gallery, and to ask if you can offer any recommendations.
The project addresses FCG's structural precarity, since it is currently severely underfunded, and only receives funding adequate to employ a single staff member.
I have developed a project, funded by the Canada Council, to hire a second staff member who will be paid by my (artist-)grant but will provide grant-writing services for the gallery. The work is a year-long part-time, 80 hrs/ month contract, and pays $21 / hour. Here is a link to the call for applicants. Can you recommend any of your recent grad students or local colleagues who might be looking for additional work? Assets are someone who is critical-minded, has excellent writing skills, and has an understanding of the mandate of artist-run culture.
I would additionally like to mention that fundamental seeds for understanding and criticizing neoliberalism came from your class at Western, and much of this particular project, which is premised on recognizing the inherent necessity for operating funding and adequate staffing for cultural work (contra the allure of one-time project-based funding), had its framework built out of the readings and conversations in your class. I am still grateful to you for opening my thoughts to this terrain.
all best,
Josh

Hi Josh,
Yes, this looks like a great project. It has been shared through the department, but I think the issue is that everything is so up in the air - no one knows what they are doing in the Fall. I'll send it to a couple of people in Art History who might not have thought of applying just in case. It's nice to hear about the link with that class! I never taught it again after that one round.
Best,
Kirsty

hi Kirsty,
thanks so much for writing back. I'm glad you appreciate the project, it was very much emerging from the critical perspectives I encountered in your class. I'm sorry you never taught it again, it was really one of those classes that changed the way I understood the field of art.
I understand the unknowns of these times, as it's also wreaking havoc on my planning, but I'm quite concerned that I won't find anyone to enact the work. Myself and the gallery director interviewed the qualified candidates who responded to the open call in June. Unfortunately, the top two candidates both withdrew despite being offered the job, and now I have a grant, and a project, but no prospective employee. I am feeling at a bit of a dead end, and rather disappointed, which is why I reached out to you. If you are able to imagine someone who you think might be a good fit, I would be most grateful to be able to start the project.
Thanks, and I realized from instagram that it was your birthday over the weekend, so happy belated!
best,
Josh

Do they have to be in London?

It would be best if they can work part-time in the gallery, so they likely need to be able to be near to London...
