The Employee - cover mock up?

Dear Farah,

How has summer treated you? We’re just coming out of a heatwave in Brussels that I think will be the first/last bit of summer this year.

I’m writing with a slightly time-sensitive query, which I am eager does not become a “my emergency is your emergency” situation, as I know H9 is very busy.

Art Metropole has just informed us that they would like to do a “feature page” on The Employee  for their publisher catalogue, and are requesting visuals.

Would it be possible to have a mock up of the cover to hand over to them by the end of next week?

I know that this pushes the design forward at a pace that none of us were anticipating, but given how excited we all were about the identity you proposed for the website, perhaps there is a way to smoothly transition that into a draft cover?

Let me know what is possible, Farah, and thank you as always,

Lauren

Hey Lauren!

Exciting news!
I think this could work. Is it alright if we maybe change the cover in the future, even a little? I think the website landing is basically how I'd like to proceed for the book cover, so I think it's ok. But it might change a little, esp dimensions/ratio, and the exact information that appears. Is that alright?

Thanks!

Amazing Farah - Thank you for such a quick and positive reply!

Yes, the cover can absolutely shift from this version, as long as the identity remains recognisable.

We also had to tell them what size the book would be and said 6x9 inches. Let me know if that aligns with what you are thinking.

I’ve pasted the newest “blurb” of the book below so that you have all the up-to-date information on contributors.

Merci!
Lauren

The Employee is a conceptual artwork by Joshua Schwebel that took place between September 2020 and October 2021 at Forest City Gallery, an artist-run centre in London, Ontario. As one of Canada’s first artist-run centres, FCG has been publicly funded for almost fifty years and operates on the labour of a sole staff member. Schwebel’s artwork established a one-year contract for grant-writing work as a performance on behalf of the gallery. By supplementing the insufficient work-force of the gallery, The Employee commented on the precarity of cultural work. This publication comprises critical texts that thematize the precarity of publicly-funded cultural labour, first-person testimonials from cultural workers, and thoughts on institutional critique within the creative economy. It is intended to both reflect on and archive The Employee, and to trace the disintegration of boundaries between art-work-life leading up to, during and beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. The Employee is co-published by Art Metropole and Forest City Gallery. It is edited by Joshua Schwebel and Lauren Wetmore, and includes contributions by Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte, Teresa Carlesimo, Bopha Chhay, Dana Kopel, Michelle Lacombe, Denise Ryner, Joshua Schwebel, Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott, Marina Vishmidt, and Lauren Wetmore. It is designed by Farah Khan of House9 Design and copyedited by Jessica Anthony.

Hi again Farah,

As I’m looking closer at this, I want to confirm that you are happy with “designed by Farah Khan of House9 Design”? Perhaps others should be credited as well, or just House9. Let me know and I will update the blurb.

Also - we were assuming soft cover. Again, let us know if otherwise.

Thank you again,
Lauren

Hi! Quickly, the credit should be designed by House9, since so many of us work things together. On this project, it's me, Louis, Max, Jordon, Alex, Mark...

I also assume soft-cover, and 6x9 seems good. I'm OK to commit to that if you need to right now.
