Preparatory meeting

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com> To: Teresa Carlesimo <██████████████████████████ >

Dear Teresa,
I hope you are well. I shared the call on facebook with the extended deadline. The response was quite enthusiastic and the call was shared quite about.  I have received six applications so far, and I think one is quite promising, so that is positive news.
I was wondering if it would be possible to meet online some time in the next few days to gather some more information.
I am preparing the contract for the employee, and I wanted to develop a clearer job description in advance of the interview and the contract.
What might be the goals of FCG for the employee, would it be more useful to you to have the employee focus on public funding, private sponsorships, or fundraising events and initiatives?
Conceptually and politically, I would prefer to have someone engage in grant-writing, but maybe that’s not what FCG needs. If the individual is to be focused on grant-writing, however, it would be helpful to know what level of funding FCG is receiving, and what is possible in terms of increasing that.
Thanks so much,
Josh

Hi Josh,

I hope you've been keeping well. That is positive news regarding the applicants, I look forward to learning more about them!

It would benefit FCG the most for this person to focus on public funding through grant writing as well as private sponsorships rather than on fundraising events and initiatives. This also aligns more with your vision for the project, so that's great.

Below is a snapshot of FCG's anticipated revenues for 2020-2021 including a breakdown of our council funding. Please note that at present all of the funding we receive through council grants is core operating funding, so there are opportunities to both increase the amounts of operating grants as well as increase council funding through project grants and diversifying our granting streams. Please also note that our budget line for Events revenue has historically been rather healthy, however, in light of COVID our actuals will likely be dramatically different. I hope this will help give you a better idea of things ahead of our meeting.

Donations: $12,000
Membership fees: $5,000
Events: $13,000
Grants: $90,000 (CCA $40,000; OAC $25,000; LAC $25,000)
Miscellaneous: $3,000
— Total Revenue: $123,000

This week is already quite busy, but I can meet on Thursday at 9am for an hour (Ontario time), or anytime on Friday.

My best,

Teresa Carlesimo (she/her)

Hi Teresa,
Thanks so much for this information. It’s so good to know that it’s best for the gallery as well if my employee focuses on grant writing.
For me it’s better to meet on Friday.
What time works for you?

Hi Josh,

Are you free to meet at 9.30am Ontario time on Friday?

Hi Josh,

There were a few unexpected things that arose over the weekend, so I apologize for the slow follow-up to our Friday meeting.

Here are the deadlines from the last grant cycle. The upcoming year's deadlines will not be these dates exactly but they always fall close to the same time.

Canada Council for the Arts — October 24

Ontario Arts Council — March 3

butLondon Arts Council — February 21

Young Canada Works (Heritage Organizations Stream) — January 22

Canada Summer Jobs — February 28

The last two grants are obviously not core operating funding. FCG has not historically pursued these grants however I'm interested in doing so for the next cycle. Of course, this may not be something for the grant writer position since these sorts of grants don't offer sustainability, I simply thought it's a good idea to mention them to you.

My best,

Teresa Carlesimo (she/her)

Hi Teresa,
Sorry I hadn’t shared the folder with you earlier, my mistake.
Also, thank you so much for this schedule, it looks great relative to the employee’s timeline.
Let me know if you need anything else.
