Hello Josh,

First, my apologies for the very belated reply to your message! We’ve been in an editorial crunch for the last while, and a grant crunch before that. Thank you very much for your interest in Fillip! Our publishing schedule is full through to next year, but as per below, it does sound like your work aligns well with the Services book, which has come out of the discussion groups on art as service work led by Andrea Fraser and Helmut Draxler in the mid-90s (to be released later this spring). Would you be interested in presenting a talk/workshop on or around the Employee or the publication project? Currently we have availability in our programming schedule for June and beyond.

We have an editorial board that collectively determines the content/direction of our publishing program, and they will next be meeting in June. I would be happy to bring the projects to their attention, as well as any potential event we can collaborate on.

Thanks Josh! And best,

Kate

Dear Kate,
Good to hear from you. I would be happy to include the Employee project in this framework. I could give a presentation about the project, perhaps in conversation with the director of Forest City Gallery, Teresa Carlesimo, and my employee Camille-Zoë Valcourt-Synnott.
Do let me know what sort of information you might need to support your decision regarding the programming of the project in this context.
My best,
Josh

Great news, Josh. Kate will be in touch regarding timing and additional information necessary.

Bests

Hi Josh,

I’m so glad you’re interested in doing the event! What you’ve proposed below sounds great.

Is there a date in June that would work for you and your collaborators? We typically host our events on either weekday evenings (Tues, Weds, Thurs) or Saturday afternoons. I know you mentioned you’re in Berlin currently, so perhaps a Saturday afternoon (local Vancouver time) might be a bit more manageable across time zones? Our schedule is still fairly open that month, and the 5th, 12th and 19th are all available.

I also wanted to send you a bit more information about our regular events series (pasted below) – what you’ve proposed sounds to me like it could fit in well with our “Means of Production” events/workshops, but let me know if you have other thoughts.

This year we can offer you a presenter’s fee of $450 CAD, with $250 CAD moderator/discussant’s fees for Teresa and Camille-Zoë. Please let me know if this is agreeable.

Looking forward!

Kate

About Fillip events:

We have two ongoing events series: "Reading Groups" and "Means of Production." The Reading Groups are seminar-style discussions on a body of work chosen by the presenter. They can provide a speculative space for the audience and presenter to investigate concerns at the borders of their practice. Means of Production is a series of theoretical workshops investigating the material conditions of contemporary artistic practice. Organized alongside the Reading Groups, these workshops address issues of labour, infrastructure, and production. Past topics have included Living as an Artist (presented by Eli Bornowsky), W.A.G.E. (Andrea Fraser), Research (Mercedes Eng), Photography as a Tool (Winfried Heininger), Criticism (Steffanie Ling), A History of Resistance (Grace Ndiritu) and others.

Regarding timing —

There is a small chance I’ll be out of the studio June 8-19. So earlier or end of the month is better for me!

Sorry not to mention this earlier.

Jeff

Ok, thanks Jeff. We can also plan for July!

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com> To: Kate Woolf <██████████████> Cc: Jeff Khonsary <██████████████>

Dear Jeff and Kate,
Thank you for this additional information.
I will check with Camille and Teresa and get back to you about a date.
For myself, June 5 is doable, as is July (although the time difference will indeed be a struggle for me—my brain really shuts down at 11pm. I think 2pm Vancouver time is the latest I could image the event starting). I agree with you that this conversation would fit squarely in the “Means of Production” category.
Thank you also for mentioning the fees. If there is a way to even it out so that we each receive around $300 that would be better, but if not, I can try to remediate the difference myself.
I really appreciate your interest in the project, and I look forward to the chance to speak about it in this context.
More soon,
Josh

Hi Josh,

Thanks, sounds good! Please let us know about the date whenever you hear back. Starting at 1 or 2pm PST on a Saturday seems fine to me. Jeff, do you think we could do even earlier? Noon?

And yes, no problem about the fees. I can send you each the equivalent of $317 CAD, if that works.

Once we have the date confirmed, I’ll follow up for more info (blurbs, bios, etc) and we can schedule a tech-test to make sure our streaming setup is working for everyone. Typically we host the event on a Skype call or similar, and Jeff live-streams the call via our Vimeo account. This allows for some audience participation in a Q&A capacity via Vimeo’s live chat.

Thank you, Josh! And best,

Kate

hi Kate,
I am just waiting to get a confirmation on the date from Teresa and Camille. The rest sounds great. Glad that you are able to split the fee three ways.
Until soon, and thank you too!
best,
Josh
