Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com> To: Mitchel Cumming <█████████████████████ >

hi Mitchel!
I hope you're keeping well.
I have wanted to get in touch for a while, as I am preparing to publish a catalogue alongside this project, and have had you in mind as I am imagining who I would like to invite to write. I read your Master's thesis with genuine joy, and I think that your experience with KNULP and your interest in support structures and conceptual art / institutional critique match well with this project.
I can give you more details if you are interested, but concretely the project is still ongoing, so there is still quite some time before the text will be due (likely this coming September at the earliest).
I hope that the text will be around 2000 words, for which I can pay 600 CAD.
I would be happy to speak with you in greater detail at any time.
warm greetings from Berlin,
x

Hello Josh,

So nice to hear from you, and to hear about this new work.

As you say, The Employee feels very much connected to my current thinking and practice, and I would love the chance to write alongside it.

It would be wonderful to hear more about the project, the process of its negotiation and development. I am currently trying in vain to get home to Australia (our Government has all but barred us from entering due to Covid), but one upside of this situation is that we find ourselves in the same time zone. Perhaps we can tee up a zoom at some point in the near future to get the ball rolling?

Thanks again for the kind words re: the thesis, and for thinking of me for the catalogue.

Very much looking forward,
M

Hi Mitchel,
I am so happy that you would be interested to write about the project!
I would be delighted to zoom in the next short while.
I could have time to meet next wednesday or thursday during the afternoon. Would either of those days work for you?
Sorry you’re trapped interminably in EU winter.
All my best, and looking forward to speaking soon.
x

Hi Josh,

Beaut, let's shoot for 3pm on Wednesday for a chat if that still suits?
If there is any background info/documentation that you think might be useful for me to browse through before we talk let me know.

Till soon!
Mx

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com>

Hi Mitchel,
Wednesday at 3pm works for me. I can't think of anything in particular that you would need to acquaint yourself with in advance, but I will share the Publication google drive folder with you so you can look over the employment contracts and call for applicants if you are curious...
thanks so much for your enthusiasm, I look forward to catching up!
here's the meeting link:

See you then,
x

Hi Josh,

So great to catch up this afternoon!

Thanks again for introducing me to the project first-hand, I'm really looking forward to talking/thinking together more as the work plays out.

I've attached a copy of KNULP's proposal for the upcoming Carriageworks exhibition here just in case you feel like a browse. They have been "unable to accommodate" our suggested redistribution, so we have decided to return our participation fee to the institution in the form of a non-conditional donation. There is something perverse about an unfunded independent space giving $5k to a financially strained state institution which we enjoy.

All the best for now!
M

Josh Schwebel <privatejosh@gmail.com>

dear Mitchel,
thank you so much for the generous conversation this afternoon. It was such a pleasure to work into the project more deeply through your questions.
Also, thank you for sharing this Carriageworks project with me. It is beautifully written, and nails the problem and the potential solution so elegantly.
It's a poor choice on their part that they refused it, and I do hope that they will at least do you the courtesy of exhibiting your letter.
Perverse indeed, but way to go for pushing back and for trying to rebalance something that is wrong in exactly the ways you stated.
I am so glad that we can continue this exchange.
take care and until soon,
x
Josh
